As solar energy heats the upper edges of our atmosphere where satellites operate, it causes the thin shell of air around our planet to expand. This has led to an atmosphere in low Earth orbit that is 2-3 times denser than scientists initially predicted, exerting a drag force that gradually pulls satellites down toward a fiery reentry. While this may be good news for clearing space debris, it’s far from ideal for satellite operators striving to maintain their missions.
